"The Conference of the Birds" by Peter Sis

This stunningly beautiful book is an adaptation of a classic 12th century Sufi poem.  The amazing illustrations tell the story as much as the words; in fact the trylu work together to express the emotions explored in this beautiful piece.

The birds of the world meet together, and under the leadership of the hoopoe bird, decide to embark upon a perilous journey to find solutions to the issues facing their community.  They all set off to the Mountain of Kaf to seek the guidance of their King, Simorgh.  As the birds fly through their journey, it is evident that not all the birds are strong or brave enough to make it to the end.  However, those that are able are rewarded with the most honest and hopeful truth there is.

The Conference of the Birds (in flight).

I cannot say enough about the sheer beauty on these pages.  I tried to take a picture to show you just one open page, but trust me when I say this photo does not do the artwork justice.  The paper on which it is printed is also very high quality, and just lovely.  This book is not to be missed in hardcover form.  I just haven't seen a book quite like this...  it is almost like a picture book for adults. I will share this with my children, maybe when they get a little older though.  I'm curious to see when they might grasp the deeper philosophical meaning of the book, and it would never hurt for them to "get it" sooner than later.  I am also considering giving this book as a Christmas gift this year. In any event - the copy that I hold right now will stay with me for as long as possible.

Many thanks to TLC Book Tours for including me on this tour!

Funny, I was just looking at this book in the store yesterday. It *is* lovely and such a departure from the works I usually associate with Mr. Sis.

What a beautiful book! I'm always interested in authors who take a risk and include something different like these illustrations. The story itself sounds quite exceptional as well. Thanks for sharing!

This poem is completely new to me but I'm really intrigued by it. And the illustrations are simply gorgeous!

Thanks for being on the tour.

Wow, I am eager to check this out. Peter Sis is an interesting guy... His board book about a little boy who turns into a fire truck was a daily read-aloud when my son was 3. :-)
