Ready, Set, Read-a-Thon!!

Now begins Dewey's 24-Hour Read-a-Thon!

I'm pretty excited about this...  it is the perfect excuse for me to put all those chores aside and say "sorry, I'm reading today.  ALL.  DAY."  I've always wanted to participate in Dewey's Read-a-thon, but the timing never worked out right for me - until this time around!    I'm going into the event mostly finished with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer...  so I may try to finish that first, or put it aside for something lighter.  I have some review books (one that is due very soon!) that I need to get to, and then there are a few other books that I'm hoping to get to.  It is a long laundry list, and I'm not fooling myself into thinking that I'll actually be able to read the whole time.  Not even the whole time I'm awake...  but I will do my best!  I'll keep track of my status in this post, as well as on Twitter.

Good luck to everyone else reading today!

Start:  8am           Reading:  Grow Up by Ben Brooks.

I decided to put aside Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for the time being and start with this review book that is to be published next week.  I have showered, kids have been fed and I am READY TO GO.

Check In:  11am    Still reading Grow Up.  On page 169 of 272 (egalley edition)

I think this was a good first book to read...  it is kind of rambling and while I'm not sure what the point is yet (perhaps just a vision of British youth?) it is funny and entertaining.

Kids are behaving (!) and I just started the latest Chipmunks movie for them.  In return, they have been feeding me from their Easter baskets.  We all win today.

Check in :  2pm      Reading:  The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Finished book one around 1:30, and am halfway through this very short piece.  The kids and I had a little lunch break, and the youngest is down for his nap now.  A nap is feeling like a good idea actually!

Not sure what my next book will be... nap or no nap, I'll be well into another book by the next check-in time.

Check in:  5pm      Reading:  Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess (currently pg 89/212)

Well, I did have a little nap there, but finished The Yellow Wallpaper first.  Such a creepy, sad and too short story!  Husband called when he got out of school, and is currently at the Red Sox/Yankees game.  The kids are still being pretty good and are looking forward to a pizza picnic in the living room for dinner.

Thought I'd quickly mention that I haven't participated in any mini-challenges yet, and I'm not really planning on it.  I think it is awesome though!  It is really great that people volunteer to host these mini-challenges to give readers a little diversion.

OK - a few more chapters, then time to call the pizza delivery guy!

Check in:  8pm     Reading:  Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel (just starting)

It's not quite 8, but I'm in between books and need to get the kids in bed... so good time to write a little check in.  I've finished Such a Pretty Girl and am getting ready to start Like Water for Chocolate.  I had made myself a nice little stack of book choices for this readathon... and yet still spent 15 minutes choosing this book which was not in the pile.  My other choices were O Pioneers! or The Maltese Falcon, also not in my readathon pile.   No worries....  it was a good idea and seems to work for others!

But - This is technically the halfway point!  I can't believe I've spent the majority of the past 12 hours reading...  and that I have finished 3 books!  I think I've probably only got another 3 hours (hopefully!) in me...  but this has been awesome!

Check in:  11pm

You're doing great so far!! 3 books already finished is super impressive, I must say! Don't be afraid to take a few breaks, because that'll help you read faster and you won't be as tired. ;) Keep on going! You're doing awesome, so far. Good luck with the rest of the readathon!
