Book Review: "City of Ashes" by Cassandra Clare

In this second book of the Mortal Instruments series, Clary, Jace, Simon, Alec and Isabelle are trying to figure out what they are up against in Valentine.  Not helping matters is the Clave's Inquisitor who has her eye on Jace and believes him to be a spy for the enemy.  Valentine is amassing power quickly and ruthlessly unless our young heroes can get the Clave to listen and realize the truth of the situation - or will they have to stop him themselves?

Now this is a little more like it.  You might remember that I was a little disappointed in the first book of this series, City of Bones.  I liked the world, the characters, but I found it predictable and that kind of bores me.
But I trusted what I had been told; that the writing in the books get better as the series progresses.  And, honestly, I really did enjoy this more.  The love triangle is a little weak to me, but I suspect there is something else hidden that will settle that.  I'm not sure what the twist will be, but I hope it works out the way I want it to.  There was a huge twist, not far into this book, that really threw me for a loop.  I'm actually incredibly surprised that this little bit of information didn't find me through a review or something - and I'm so thankful it wasn't spoiled for me!

I liked seeing more of the characters that sort of hung around the edges of the first book....  especially Magnus and Luke.  I think I may be a little partial to Magnus, as I know him from the Infernal Devices....   but then again, I'm usually drawn to sparkly things.  Speaking of the Infernal Devices - I was a little surprised to see a familiar surname pop up here.  I kept trying to tie the characters together...  but I don't think it is possible.  I wonder (hope) that the circle will be somewhat closed in Clockwork Princess.  But before that, I still have a few Mortal Instruments books to read through....  Next, please!

I love Cassandra Clare! I've read the Mortal Instruments but haven't started Infernal Devices. I'm excited to see the characters show up in the "before" books! It's cool you had that background going into these books already! Great review :)

I LOVE these books. I've said it before, but I do love them. Book 4, not my favorite, so watch out for that one. But #5 redeems it all for me.

Thanks Courtney, but I've actually read them all now. I just spaced out the reviews a bit so they wouldn't be right in a row :)

Do you recommend starting with this series or the prequels? I want to read Clare as she is so popular but am unsure what the best order would be.

I started with the prequels- The Infernal Devices series. You can start with either, but if you start with The Mortal Devices don't just read the first book or you will be disappointed. Keep reading as it (the writing & the story) gets better!
