Book Review: "City of Ashes" by Cassandra Clare
Now this is a little more like it. You might remember that I was a little disappointed in the first book of this series, City of Bones. I liked the world, the characters, but I found it predictable and that kind of bores me.
But I trusted what I had been told; that the writing in the books get better as the series progresses. And, honestly, I really did enjoy this more. The love triangle is a little weak to me, but I suspect there is something else hidden that will settle that. I'm not sure what the twist will be, but I hope it works out the way I want it to. There was a huge twist, not far into this book, that really threw me for a loop. I'm actually incredibly surprised that this little bit of information didn't find me through a review or something - and I'm so thankful it wasn't spoiled for me!
I liked seeing more of the characters that sort of hung around the edges of the first book.... especially Magnus and Luke. I think I may be a little partial to Magnus, as I know him from the Infernal Devices.... but then again, I'm usually drawn to sparkly things. Speaking of the Infernal Devices - I was a little surprised to see a familiar surname pop up here. I kept trying to tie the characters together... but I don't think it is possible. I wonder (hope) that the circle will be somewhat closed in Clockwork Princess. But before that, I still have a few Mortal Instruments books to read through.... Next, please!
