Graphic Novel Review: "The Walking Dead: Book One" by Robert Kirkman

A small town cop, Rick Grimes, wakens from a coma to find everyone gone and the world overrun by zombies.  In this first book of the series, Grimes searches for his family and a way to survive.  He finds unexpected help and tries to learn about the undead monsters roaming the now unfamiliar landscape.

This book is the basis for the hit television show - of which I have only watched the first season.  Most of this book is covered in that first season - though I suspect that it gets into the second season as well.  And maybe things are exactly the same, or perhaps some characters were created for the show or will show up later in the books.  I don't really know....  But I will say that the illustrations and dialogue here effectively move the story along quickly and with necessary suspense and emotion.

Rick Grimes is a great main character.  It is obvious that he is the hero - the do good cop that keeps his head in tense situations and the one that everyone can look up to.  Even so, it was good to see him lose his cool a little and show that he is not exactly superhuman.  He is surrounded by a diverse cast of characters as well, and I like learning about their histories, and their quirks.  My brother has let me borrow the first three books of the series, so I will obviously be reading on.  This was a great quick read to insert between two books of similar genres...  nice way to mix it up a bit.
