5 Years Blogging and a Work Update

It doesn't seem possible, but I have actually been writing here at this blog thing for 5 whole years now.  Which is especially something when I've been in grad school for nearly the past three years.  I won't deny it, there have been times when I wanted to just stop and say forget it...  but I haven't.  No matter how busy I get, how stressed or overwhelmed (or maybe because of it) I still absolutely love to read.  And when I read, I want to talk about it.  I want to share what got out of the experience and see if anyone else can relate.  But there has become this internal struggle for me, and let me lay it out for you because I'd love to know what you think:

I primarily write and keep up this blog for me.  I love the response and I check the stats way way more than I should...  this really is for me.  But I hold back in what I write... because I'm writing posts with an audience in mind.  So where I might want to go off on something that the book touched off in me or go more in depth with plot and absolutely share details that are positively spoileriffic - I don't.  And part of me really wants to just go ahead and do that.  However, I am also writing this with a librarian perspective, and I don't want to give away spoilers but instead think about to whom I might recommend a particular book, regardless of what I thought of it.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

And now some exciting news (hence the fireworks):  I was promoted at work!  YEA!!  I am now the Head of Readers' Services at my public library!!  This all went down a couple of weeks ago, and at some point this week it all just kind of sank in.  This transition period is overwhelming with everything that I'm learning and figuring out, but also has been fairly smooth with the great people that I work with .  I will soon be finding someone to fill the YA librarian position, which will be a difficult task.  Not because there aren't a ton of wonderful candidates out there - I know there are - but because I am so close to it.  It will be hard for me to hand over the reigns to someone else but at the same time, I'm excited to see what a new person will accomplish with our community.  Overall - I've basically had a majorly huge goofy grin on my face for the past few weeks, and I don't think its going away anytime soon.  After all - just 7 weeks left of classes... FOREVER!

Congratulations! You must be thrilled. Nothing better than landing your dream job.

I agree about not spoiling -- I'm writing from a librarian's perspective too. Maybe you could do separate posts clearly labeled that it's not a review -- more of an analysis with spoilers.

Good luck!

That is a good idea Annette... Or maybe structure the posts in two parts (at least the ones I want to get really into) and keep the first part without spoilers and with readers advisory type recommendations... and then make a clear line to show when I want to break parts down and let loose with possible spoilers. Hmm.... definitely something I will keep thinking about. Thanks!

Congrats on the new job and on the blogging anniversary!

I agree with Annette. Either separate posts or clearly marked sections of a post would be a great idea.

Congratulations! Wonderful news! I also agree that letting your readers know if spoilers are coming up is a good idea. If I've already read the same book, I'd love to see what you think of some of the same things, but if I haven't read it yet but might, I wouldn't want the spoilers sneaking in there.

Congrats on the five years AND the promotion!

As for the going off on tangents and spoilers I say just add a section at the end under a separate heading and just do a data-dump. I know my posts are full of tangential thoughts and connections, but that's how mine have always been :-D
