Book Review & Giveaway (US/Canada): "Things You've Inherited From Your Mother" by Hollie Adams

Thirty-something Carrie Fowler has just lost her mother after a battle with pancreatic cancer and is having trouble dealing with this new reality.  She isn't getting on very well with those she works with, she is lying to pretty much everyone around her, is nearly completely disconnected from her teen daughter, and hates the fat cat she inherited from her mother.  In the midst of all of this, she has decided to write a self-help book and also a throw-back to the "choose-your-own adventure" type book.

The author lays the dry humor pretty think throughout this book.  Its a little jarring at first - after all, you are expecting something more emotional or introspective considering the main character had just lost her mother.  But once I got used to this tone, I loosened up a bit.  There is a good section in the middle that had me in near tears with laughter!  But then the ending just kind of missed for me.

Basically, we're dealing with a main character who isn't confronting anything that is going on her life.  This eventually catches up to her once everything is a complete mess - and then its over. She isn't really a likeable character - and that's okay - but I was hoping for that redeeming moment I guess.  I did enjoy the writing style though, and very much.  It feels aggressive (in a good way - not passive which can get boring) and is at times very funny.

I received this as part of the TLC Book Tour, and am therefore able to give a copy of this book away to one of you - if you live in the US or Canada.  If you are interested in winning a copy of this book, and you live in either the US or Canada - simply comment with some way for me to get in contact with you by May 26, 2015.  (If you leave your email address, please put a space in it like yourname @ email . com)
