Book Reviews: "Lick" and "Play" by Kylie Scott

I don't do this often, but as I read these two novels back-to-back during Dewey's 24-hour readathon, I thought I'd post about them together as well.  They are the first two books, or the first half of the Stage Dive series by Kylie Scott.

Evelyn goes to Vegas to celebrate her 21st birthday with her best friend Lauren.  Ev is looking for a wild night that hopefully includes sex.  She does get that wild night, or at least a night she doesn't remember and wakes up in a sorry state on the bathroom floor.  She's not alone though, a hot guy is helping her out and oh, yeah, she's wearing a wedding ring.  What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas, especially when that ring was given to her by that hot guy - David - aka the guitarist in Stage Dive, the hottest band around.

This is a fun, sexy, sweet, and funny story that I really enjoyed.  I think we've all had that daydream... what if we meet (insert celeb crush here) and sparks fly?  Well, Ev isn't really into David and his band, but she finds that she's into David the person.  They obviously has some kind of chemistry when they met (too bad Ev can't remember it) and they get a second chance to build on that.

In Play, we meet Anne, who has just been screwed over by her roommate.  She has an unrequited crush on her friend/boss and is just down.  Her neighbor, Lauren, invites her to a party at Ev & David's which seems like a nice distraction.  While there, she meets Mal, the drummer from Stage Dive (who we first meet in Lick).  Mal is having some issues himself, but its nothing he'll talk about with anyone.  In his manic and impulsive way, he decides that he's going to move in with Anne and asks her to be his fake girlfriend.  Of course it doesn't stay fake for too long, as actual feelings start to develop.  Mal's issues come to the surface though and threaten to ruin it all.

Mal is such a fun character!  He made me laugh so much in the first book, and I was glad to get to know him a little better here.  He and Anne balance each other out well, but I'm not sure I could handle being in any sort of relationship with anyone like Mal.  I mean, it all becomes more clear in the end, but he is kind of exhausting.  I've got to hand it to Anne!
I am going to finish up this series for sure.  I'm especially curious about the next book.  It features someone in the band that I haven't had much reason to like up to this point, so I'm wondering how that will work.  Also one person I know loved book 3, and another said it was her least favorite in the series.  So I obviously need to figure that out too!
