Book Review: "Geekerella" by Ashley Poston

Geek girl Elle Wittimer never expectes to meet the heartthrob star slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot of her favorite sci-fi series.  Teen actor Darien Freeman never expected to meet a girl who loves Starfield as much as he does - let alone a girl who doesn't think he's going to screw up an iconic character.  But throw in a beautiful cosplay gown, a food truck called the Magic Pumpkin, and a missing slipper, and anything can happen once upon a con.... (from the publisher).

I never ever use the publisher's synopsis of a book, but this is just way more concise than I could ever be.  You see, I loved this book, and I would just gush and gush and never get out of the synopsis part of this post!  So there you have it.

The bottom line is that this is a geeky and modern spin on the classic Cinderella tale.  So you know basically what is going to end up happening, but the twists that Poston puts on it all is just so much fun!  I loved all the different subtle nods to the fandoms out there - though I'm sure some went right over my head.  I also liked the fact that the cast of characters seemed to be effortlessly diverse.  There wasn't the token person of color or gay friend way in the background.  This helped this fairy tale seem more realistic.

So I don't want to give away any of the sweet or adorable treats in store for you in this book.  Just know that I loved it, I already have a few specific people that I know need to read this, and you can feel pretty confident handing this to any young person or adult who appreciates YA literature as well as fandoms and cons.
